4. With the increase in the number of persons treated in this Hospital, both as in and out-door patients, there has been obviously an increase in the daily routine work of the Hospital Pharmacy. The number of in-patients treated in 1883 was 1509; in 1889 it was 1793. In 1883 there were 1399 prescriptions, exclusive of repetitions, dispensed for out-patients; in 1889 the total reached 3103. The work for out-patients has therefore more than doubled in seven years. During the year 1889 there were, including repetitions, 5264 prescriptions dispensed in the Hospital Pharmacy for out-patients alone.
5. In connection with my duties as Government Analyst, I have the honour to point out that under the recent arrangement approved by the Secretary of State in despatch No.185 of 1890, I have undertaken an increased responsibility. Under this arrangement, my duties to the Colonial Government will include the analyses required by the Sanitary Board under the Public Health Ordinance. The work in this connection comprises the analyses of water, milk, and food generally. This does not come within the scope of the duties of the office I entered on in 1883. The analytical work then required of me was confined to investigations in cases of criminal poisoning.
6. It will thus be seen that this is not a mere re-arrangement of work. It involves a substantial addition to my duties, because although the greater part of my attention will be transferred to the Laboratory, I shall still be required to supervise the work in the Hospital Pharmacy.
